Maureen Gubia
Maureen Gubia also explores other creative outlets such as drawing, digital painting, VR sculpting, and self-released audiovisual projects influenced by contemporary technologies and global sound art practices.
b. 1984 in Guayaquil Ecuador
An independent artist simultaneously working within the Ecuadorian art scene and the international art scene via early 2000’s online self-promotion, Maureen Gubia uses art materials from watercolors and pastels to oil paint to convey apparitions of both real and imaginary figures with a semi-abstract approach rooted in 20th century Expressionism and underground animation.
Other creative outlets include drawing, digital painting, VR sculpting and self released audiovisual output influenced by current technologies and sound art practices around the globe. Artist-in-residence in Ayampe, Ecuador in 2019 and was included in art fairs such as Art Lima in 2013 and (un)fair Milan, Italy in 2023.
Gubia’s intensely pigmented colors and precise painterly brushstrokes depicting phantasmagoric folklore by way of referencing found and discarded vernacular photography veer towards hazy, yet deeply emotional portraiture within a constant worldbuilding art practice.
